Continuing its path of participation in charitable causes, Sampson Community College’s Psychology Club attended the 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Fayetteville recently and it is the second year in a row the group has made the walk.
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease!
“The SCC Psychology Club attended the Fayetteville Walk to End Alzheimer’s last year and we wanted to continue the tradition this year,” says Sarah Burgin, SCC Psychology Instructor and Psychology Club Advisor. “Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s affects many families since it is the most common type of dementia. We hope that our participation in this walk will help bring awareness to the disease and support research for a cure.”
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder that causes brain cells to waste away (degenerate) and die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that disrupts a person’s ability to function independently.
When participants walk, fundraising dollars fuel the mission, and participation in the event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in the community. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help participants reach their fundraising goal and members of SCC’s Psych Club are no different.
“I chose to attend the Walk to End Alzheimer’s because I have a family member who is struggling with dementia and I knew it would lift my spirits to be able to see how many people were there supporting the cause,” says Courtney Eads, SCC Student and Psychology Club Vice President. “It was encouraging to be able to see so many people gathering together to support a worthy cause. The members of the Psychology Club try to attend as many events as we can to support various causes and spread awareness.”
